The Recreational Skipper's Ticket (RST) is a certificate assessing a set of marine safety competencies, which ensures people in charge of recreational power crafts, including jet skis and yachts with motors, have the minimum skills and knowledge to protect themselves and their passengers, and to share the waterways safely with others.
This certification, an initiative of the Department of Transport, ensures boat owners have the knowledge and essential skills to safely operate their vessels. As of April 1 2008, every skipper of a registrable, recreational vessel, powered by a motor greater than 4.5kwp (6 hp) (RST vessel) is required to hold a Recreational Skipper's Ticket.
The cost of the Theory and Practical assessment is $185.00 Practical and theory revision if required is a single cost of $65.00. Usually one hour is enough.
You do not have to participate in a training course to gain an RST, but if you would like to undertake some revision immediately prior to the assessment this can be arranged. We strongly advise that you do take revision no matter what your boat handling experience may be. There is a comprehensive workbook available as a self-learn package and it contains all the information you will need. You can collect one of these workbooks from any Dept. of Transport licensing office if you do not have internet or go to https://www.transport.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/marine/MAC_P_RST_Workbook2023.pdf
Once you have accessed your book ensure that you carefully read the assessment process. Further attempts at passing the theory or practical assessments will incur additional costs of $75.00 each.
